What is RO Reject?

Reverse Osmosis (RO) water treatment technology has been used for years in various industries to separate dissolved solids from water by forcing the water through a semi-permeable membrane. RO reject water disposal is also commonly used to purify drinking water and desalinate seawater to yield potable water. The water and other molecules with lower molecular weight (specific weight of molecules allowed to pass through is dependent on the selected membrane) pass through the micropores in the membrane, yielding a purified water stream called the permeate. Larger molecules are retained by the membrane as well as a portion of the water that does not pass through the membrane. This concentrated stream is called the concentrate or RO reject. The RO Reject Water Evaporation System converts the water portion of water-based waste to water vapor, while leaving the higher boiling contaminants behind. This greatly minimizes the amount of waste that needs to be hauled off-site.

RO reject water is water that has been rejected by a reverse osmosis (RO) water treatment system. RO systems use a semi-permeable membrane to purify water by removing contaminants and dissolved solids. The rejected water can be difficult to dispose of because it can be highly saline. Here are some ways to treat RO reject water:

Evaporation

A tried-and-true method for reducing the water content of waste. Evaporation can concentrate waste streams, handle a wider range of waste streams, and minimize the amount of waste that needs to be hauled off-site.

Zero liquid discharge (ZLD)

A water treatment technology that aims to reuse as much water as possible in the manufacturing process. ZLD has little to no environmental impact.

Reuse

RO reject water can be reused for cleaning utensils or mopping floors. It's clean except for dissolved impurities, so it's a good alternative to wasting fresh water.
